Since I had previously updated my MD file manually and set up the
securities (with ticker symbol) already in the account, the first time
I downloaded I just used the popup to tell MD which of the securities
I set up matched the full name as given by Schwab. This only had to be
done one time for each security. And, I had to delete a whole bunch of
transactions from the download because I had already entered them and
reconciled them to many months worth of previous statements, and MD
didn't match them. Maybe the latest version would do a better job
matching, or maybe it just doesn't match to already-reconciled
transactions.
Since the first download included many transactions over many months,
this was EXTREMELY tedious because MD doesn't support multiple-select
to delete; I had to delete them one at a time.
Subsequently, if a new security appears on a transaction (e.g., a
BUY), I just let MD add the security and it sets the ticker symbol
correctly.
To see the ticker symbol, I go to the Tools menu, Edit securities,
choose the security, click Edit and in the resulting security detail
dialog, click the Edit button. Pretty roundabout, but there it is.
I can't think of any reason to set up a category for a symbol.
