Yes, this is basically what they are for, and what Q classes are for.

But tags are not remembered for auto-completion. Tags apply only to one 
side of a transaction, in contrast with everything else in MD. Entering 
tags by the keyboard requires a partly blind and somewhat bizarre sequence 
of keystrokes, which sometimes don't work, apparently for the sake of 
allowing multiple tags on a transaction, which wasn't needed. And these 
issues were all reported in the first few months after tags were 
implemented, and have not been addressed.

True, if you like the one report on which tags are enabled, but tags are 
not enabled on other reports. Yes, this is just part of MD's reporting 
being poor, but the fact that transaction selection is predefined for each 
report, rather than allowing a reasonable method of selecting transactions 
to report on, is one of the main reasons that MD's reporting is so poor.
