A tag is an additional form of classification, independent of the Category
and no constrained by double-entry rules.

If you've used Quicken, tags are intended as the replacement for Quicken
classes.

I use tags in organizing business expenses. For example, my categories
contain things like Travel Lodging, Transportation, and Cost of Operations.
I need these categories for tax reporting. However, these expenses may be
billable to various clients. Having a subcategory for each client is
unwieldy (though some people used this method before tags were
implemented). So I use a tag for each client. Then I can report by either
category or tag, depending on the purpose of the report (at least within
MD's limited reporting capabilities).

I think there are a few, but I'll leave that to those who've used them.
