I also dislike it. (In case it matters, I'm on MD build 622, Java 1.6.0_07, 
Windows XP with latest patches.) I'm not sure, but I think it's 
inconsistent, leading to the conclusion that it's probably a bug.

MD still has lots of focus problems. I haven't reported any in a long time. 
I should look back and see if any got reported. (I wish the trac would 
notify the originator when updates are posted!!!)
