I fully concur with A.J.R Bayer with respect to option for reverse ordering of dates on "Security History. Keeping the most current at the top would remove the necessity to constantly scroll down. This is currently available in the "Register".
I use History on the Mac OS X 10.5.5 without experiencing the problem reported by Rowland. The amount inserted in "Current Price" automatically calculates values regardless of amounts shown in history unless reports are requested for a specific date.
Frequently I need to insert a value for a prior date but do not wish to change the current one. I go to History>New Price>Amend date and value>Done. The new value appears in the correct chronological order but does not change the calculation as the most recent price still shows as the "Current Price" Obviously this is only of value if you wish to insert an earlier date value.

I have to do the same thing with several investments.
My methodology is slightly different. (I used to do it the way you describe but noticed the same problem you have.)
I open the history as you do and then click on the New Button for prices.
I scroll down to the bottom (how I wish there were an option for reverse ordering) and amend the date and then enter the data that I have which in most cases is the closing price quoted in the news source from the fund manager.
Then I update the price window at the top - the one that affects the price that shows in the main window and is used in calculations.
This seems to keep things accurate.
I know that when I open history again update new prices, and new price materialises from somewhere but I do not know what generates it. However, I only open the history when I update prices so it does not seem to affect things
