Contrary to what someone else wrote, there is a function in MD to do this.
It's accessed by File -> Archive. The resulting dialog box allows you to
select an archive file, a cutoff date, and whether to archive only cleared
transactions.

I can't tell you whether it works (though I assume it does) because despite
having about 15 years of personal financial history in MD, I haven't felt
the slightest need to separate old from new. It's very rare for the old
transactions to get in my way, and it would be far more of a hassle to have
to switch files when I wanted to look up something old.

You can try it out -- use the free trial period to enter some old and new
transactions and do the archive thing.

Also, AIUI, the auto-fill in MD is based on transactions in the account,
not on a separate list as in Quicken. Therefore archiving transactions
would also remove them from auto-fill source.
