I've not seen any issues at all, with me on Linux and my wife on XP.

If there are, they've escaped my eye. Of course, I don't recall the
last time I even touched the Windows box.

I don't know what that is, but what I've done here is:

My multipurpose firewall/router/http/mail/dns/proxy/dhcp/nfs/samba
server here has a separate drive in it that's mounted at /shared. I
then have that mountpoint shared out via NFS and Samba. The particular
bits in which you're interested are these:

  liberty $ ls -lh /shared/otherfiles/moneydance-data/
  -rw-rw---- 1 root finance 7.5K 2008-09-16 21:06 Checking.md
  drwxrwx--- 3 root rworkman 40 2008-02-05 22:01 archives/

Obviously both my wife and me are members of the finance group.
Bear in mind that there are security implications to sharing something
like this via NFS (hint: all_squash), but you probably don't intend to
do that anyway - samba is just fine for what most people need.
