Top posting was foisted on the world by Microsoft AFAIK. Outlook and
friends make it difficult to reply in line, especially with the
default of using HTML mail.

It's a bit more work for the sender but so much easier for the readers
to read responses bottom posted below *just* the specific question or
thought being replied to. Top posting tends to get all questions
answered in a big lump and often leaves me wondering what the thoughts
are in reference to. It almost forces you to start a new thread on
every distinct thought.

This whole question reminds me of this email sig (from
http://www.mail-archive.com/sqlite-users%40sqlite.org/msg04589.html):

A: Because it messes up the order in which people normally read text.
Q: Why is top-posting such a bad thing?
A: Top-posting.
Q: What is the most annoying thing on usenet and in e-mail?
