People who post in-line, like I do, tend to also trim the text that they
are replying to, so you don't have to read very much of the past, in
order to get context for the reply.
My mail program also colorizes text that is '>>' delimited as reply
text, making it easy to visually skip past it. But everyone uses
different mailers.
