For what it's worth,

I'll scan and keep any receipts that relate to purchases; with warranties,
that are tax deductable or are otherwise tax related, medical receipts,
receipts that relate to down payments, contracts or receipts for purchases
(like tools) that could be subject to recall issues.

Scanned receipts are maintained as computer files in folders related to the
type of receipt with date (yyyymmdd)/purchase names for easy retrieval, for
example 20090423medical_David_co-pay.

Most other original paper receipts are generally kept for 90 days and then
discarded.

Seems to work for me, but we all have our quirky ways of doing things.
