I'll third the proposal.  It would make MD's check number incrementing
scheme usable for me.

In my case, I have two simultaneous sequences of check numbers.  One set
is from the checks I physically write, and the other sequence is from
checks written by my bank's bill-pay service.  The bill-pay service
check numbers are always higher than my checkbook numbers, and they're
not sequential.  This makes MD's current scheme of picking numbers all
but useless for me (I *always* have to enter them manually, since MD
will always pick the number following the last-entered bill-pay check,
which is *never* a valid check number for me).
